Bowlander Hiking Competition 2013

At checkpoint 3

13/14 April 2013

Congratulations to our team on achieving joint 2nd place in this prestigious event – one up from last year!

31 teams from all around West Lancs competed to take home the magnificent trophy made by the late Max Melling, former District Commissioner for Morecambe & Heysham.

Teams are required to plan a route, visiting a number of checkpoints, and have to arrive at each within a limited time window based on their estimated timings within their Route Plan.

The teams reported to the start point at Rigg Lane, Quernmore early (very early in our case!) on Saturday 13 April to commence their journeys. The weather was perfect, the recent heavy snow having all but disappeared. After early morning mist there with light winds, clear skies and warm sunshine. After having an equipment check, the teams set off to navigate their route of 12 miles going via Hare Appletree, Lower Moor Head, Hollyhead House, where the residents kindly sold refreshments to the walkers, Yeat House Farm, Wellington Wood, Dolphinholme and on down the River Wyre to Guys Farm Campsite, Forton where they camped for the night.

The teams awoke early on Sunday to a cold, windy and wet morning – not ideal for walking. A further route of 6 miles was followed on Sunday taking the Scouts via Street, Foxhouses, Cliftons and Sykes and on to Harrisend Fell, Lane Head and back to Guys.

When all the marks were added up our team finished in an excellent joint 2nd place.

Congratulations to the team on an outstanding performance and for keeping up our exceptional record in this competition.

Thanks to the organising committee for another well-run and enjoyable event.
